World Impact - Fresno

Tom and Danette Bliss came from San Francisco to World Impact in Fresno as career missionaries in July 1992. They have three boys: Nathaniel, Michael, and Andrew. Their home is across from federally subsidized housing in an impoverished area of Southwest Fresno. They work to develop close relationships with their neighbors and regularly walk together through their neighborhood, praying for families as they go.

Tom heads up a vibrant and growing teen ministry. He teaches teens in club each week, does one-on-one mentoring and leads a teen worship band in weekly practice. He also helps facilitate "Urban Exposure" groups from colleges and churches that come to serve and to learn about God's heart for the inner-city. In his "spare time" he oversees property and vehicle maintenance for the World Impact ministry center and five staff homes.

Danette's life is full as a wife and mom. She also teaches in teen club, is discipling several teen girls, and ministers to the women in the neighborhood through prayer, Bible study, food, transportation and clothing. She also heads up the children's Bible club that meets in their home.

Both Tom and Danette are involved as house church coaches in their own community and in other neighborhoods.

In the years since the Bliss family moved into the Dunn Avenue neighborhood, they have seen teens who once attended their children's Bible club and came to receive salvation in Christ, teaching the next generation of Bible club kids. Some of them have gone on to World Impact's Leaders In Training (LIT) program, and others are married and raising families and are active members of a church body. Tom and Danette are excited about what God is doing in the lives of their neighbors and are praying for more volunteers to join them. They pray for a movement of lay leaders who have been coached and trained in discipleship, starting healthy, Bible-teaching home fellowships all over the inner-city.

Tom and Danette believe fruitful ministry is dependant on the prayers of God's people. They are grateful to have a wide circle of supporters who consistently bring their needs before the Lord.
